What is the Nashville Food Project?
- The Nashville Food Project began its work in Nashville in June 2007 as Mobile Loaves & Fishes. With a commissary at St. Bartholomewâ€™s Episcopal Church, our first catering truck began making runs into homeless camps three days a week, delivering sack lunch meals. Two years later in January of 2009, Mobile Loaves & Fishes moved to Woodmont Christian Church, when a second catering truck was added to the food project. When Nashville flooded in May 2010, Mobile Loaves & Fishesâ€™ volunteers delivered over 19,000 meals to displaced residents, water company employees and others working on relief and recovery across the city. Since our beginning in Nashville five years ago, our volunteers have prepared and distributed over 157,000 meals to homeless and housing insecure residents of the Nashville area.
- After a a good five years with the parent organization Mobile Loaves & Fishes, Inc., our Advisory Board decided to establish our own local nonprofit in Nashville. In October 2011, Mobile Loaves & Fishes Nashville became The Nashville Food Project. We are now an independent entity that uses local funds and local volunteer labor to address the local problems of poverty and food insecurity in our community. One hundred percent of the money we receive for our work stays in Nashville.
- The mission is to provide increased access to healthy foods in homeless and working poor communities across Davidson County. Over 100,000 people in Davidson County lack access to enough food to obtain and sustain a healthy lifestyle. The interconnected issues of poverty, low wages, unemployment and rising costs of food and living all contribute to the growing food insecurity rates in our city. How Do They Do It?
- Our Kitchens, where we use gleaned and donated foods to prepare wholesome, nutritious meals for low-income residents of Nashville.
- Our Gardens, where we grow food and grow people by offering educational opportunities for urban youth.
- Our Trucks, the tools we use to use to distribute meals from our kitchens, fresh produce from our gardens and build relationships.
- Our Relationships of accountability with our donors, our volunteers and the communities we work in.
At The Nashville Food Project, we believe healthy food is a right, not a privilege. We aim to practice hospitality by giving gifts without an expectation of receiving anything in return. We hope to grow a thoughtful community through service and education, while moving excess food to the places that lack it.
